DATES + NEWS

A real picture of the Baby, who is Very Cool

Announcements:

Tropic Bound was incredible — we came away with full hearts and even fuller bookshelves. If you didn’t make it to Tropic Bound, you may not yet be aware: Ingrid is due to give birth to a baby girl in March!

As you can imagine, she’s hard at work preparing for parenthood, and we are all hard at work preparing to run this studio with much less hands-on help from her for a little while.

This means that for the next couple of months, we’re going to ask for your patience and support in getting us through!

What to expect from us:

  • Screenprinting projects and instruction are going to have slower turn-around times

  • Communications in general will be a little slower than average, especially direct messages to Ingrid.

How to support the studio when we need it the most:

  • Come in and shop for paper! (and/or ink, carving tools, sharpening tools, linen thread, blades, bone folders, or any other pro-quality print and book tools)

  • Book some studio time with Brooke. We’ve got lots of availability on the etching presses and the bookbinding tools. This is a great time to get an introduction to either.

  • Sign up for a workshop! We’ve got some new ones in this newsletter and a few other new ones in the works.

Here are the studio:

  • Friday, February 21st, 6-9PM: Member Night: Three free hours of Open Studio, monitored by Ingrid Schindall. This is your chance to pick her brain on all kinds of shop talk — come with questions about ink and paper! Consider Member Night Ingrid’s drop-in office hours.

  • Still Waters is the new exhibition on view in the Contemporary Wing of the Miami Paper & Printing Museum. It was curated by Amanda Morgan and features highlights from the permanent collection.

  • Friday, March 14th, 6-9PM: ANOTHER Member Night! Three more free hours of Open Studio, this time monitored by Brooke Frank. Brooke will be hanging out ready to chat with you about your work and your goals for it.

Upcoming Deadlines:

  • Deadline for Spare Change Portfolio Exchange is April 1st — if you want to work on your exchange portfolio here, get in touch ASAP.

DATES TO REMEMBER

TROPIC BOUND IS ALMOST HERE:

February 6-9, Tropic Bound Artists’ Book Fair is taking over Miami’s Design District. This international fair, co-founded by Ingrid Schindall, Sarah Michelle Rupert, and Cristina Favretto, is a huge labor of love for us. The whole Miami P&Pr team will be all-hands-on-deck for the fair, so please anticipate some communication delays and a heavily booked schedule from now until February 10th.

If you know you will need some support from us (project planning, assisted studio time, private instruction, etc.) please reach out ASAP so we can figure it out.

Want to get involved with Tropic Bound? Sign up to volunteer! Being a part of the team that makes it all happen is the best way to get to know all of the teams and exhibitors.

Just want to come and see what it’s all about? Pencil us in! The fair is free to attend.

FUNKY SCHEDULING IN JANUARY:

Reminder: Brooke Frank will be away from the studio from approximately January 6-24. If you need anything that would usually be handled by Brooke while she’s gone, please email info@isprojectsfl.com or call the studio’s phone number: (305) 646-1065

Brooke handles most studio member scheduling, so members: this is especially noteworthy for you!

PORTFOLIO EXCHANGE UPDATE:

We’re off to the races! The edition specs have been sent out and the artists have started printing. If you didn’t see them, the details were sent out in an email with the subject line: Spare Change: Portfolio exchange details are here!

If you know that your plans will likely require you to be here at the studio an awful lot, we have a suggestion:

Consider a Studio Pass during the month of February.

We have 7-Day passes and 30-Day passes. We can only support four passholders at a time, so we suggest booking yours ASAP if you are hoping to come in an marathon your edition before it’s due!

The deadline to deliver your edition is April 1st, 2025, and March is going to be a little bit intense at the studio, so the sooner you get started, the better!

Members: We owe you a print or two! Come get some art for yourself or gift your print to your Valentine!

Someone may use their credit to take your print home — yet another beautiful instance of community exchange here.

PORTFOLIO EXCHANGE SIGN-UP DEADLINE IS NOV. 30!

What’s a portfolio exchange?

A portfolio exchange is a tradition in the print world. There is often a unifying theme or set of constraints proposed, and a list of artists are invited to participate. Every artist who participates will submit an edition of prints in the specified quantity, and in exchange, will receive back one print from every edition submitted by every artist participating.

This tradition is all about community and sharing, and is one of the coolest ways for artists to collect work from (and make work for!) other artists with whom they have something in common.

So what’s the deal with this exchange?

In this case, the official exchange invite will go out to a long list of artists who have been involved here at the studio since our last exchange. This includes all studio members, interns, and artists-in-residence since after our last exchange invitation went out. The invitations for this exchange were sent via email on Nov. 18th from brooke@isprojectsfl.com

If you didn’t receive that email and you want to participate in this year’s exchange, become a studio member!

The details:

The title of the exchange: Spare Change

Print Size: 11x14”

Edition Size: We’ll know how large the editions need to be once we have a headcount.

I’m already a Studio Insider and this sounds awesome! What do I do?

DATES + NEWS

The Big News:

We have been hard at work on a few huge projects lately, but it’s finally time to start spreading the word:

After 10 years of making prints and books with artists as IS Projects, we are changing the name. Welcome to life as a part of the community of the Miami Paper & Printing Museum!

Functionally, this won’t change too much about the services you’ve already come to know and love from us, but there will be a few new ways we can serve you, and a few more things we do that we’re doubling down on. The specifics will be announced by the time of the Miami Paper & Printing Museum’s Grand Opening party. All the more reason to make sure you swing by!

We’ve got a lot still to do to get everything ready for these events at the end of the month, so we’ll be grateful for all of the grace and patience you can spare on responding to emails. Of course, if you need us quickly, you can always give us a call at the studio phone number (305) 646-1065 and we can get some of the quicker questions handled more quickly.

Otherwise… Come see it all for yourself!

The Big Dates:

  • Sept. 27th, 6-8PM: Reception for Galaxias Kyklos in the Contemporary Wing of the Museum

The inaugrural exhibition for the Contemporary Wing of the Miami Paper & Printing Museum will be the Museum’s very first public event, occurring 2 days before the grand opening.

The Contemporary Wing will kick off it’s programming with the exhibition of the Galaxias Kyklos suite of etchings. These intricate etchings by Carol Prusa and printed by Kim Spivey of Ground printmaking were produced in a very limited run. This event will also offer a sneak-preview of the rest of the Miami Paper & Printing Museum, and will technically take place on the true IS Projects 10 Year Anniversary.

  • Sept. 29th, 12-4PM: Grand Opening of the Miami Paper & Printing Museum

This is the big event! Bring your friends and family and celebrate with us. We’re planning some live printing and snacks and expecting lots of loved ones and great vibes.

At this event, we will be debuting the newly installed Permanent Collection, curated by Beth Sheehan, as well as debuting our Museum Store, which will be launching as one of the best places in Miami to buy professional book and printmaking supplies, as well as a selection of handcrafted paper goods, artists’ books, prints, and zines.

Oh and one last thing about events:

  • You still have time to sign up to have a table at Small Press Fair (Nov 9th and 10th)
Small Press Fair 2024 is coming up FAST! If you would like to secure a table for yourself or a group you’re a part of, head over to the SPF website and sign up now. SPF is a great way to meet other print/book/zine makers and enthusiasts, and to share and sell the things you love to make. If you don’t want to have a table this year but still want to get involved, follow SPF on Instagram @spfftl and join the email list at the bottom of this page so you don’t miss the call for volunteers. SPF is only possible because of the love of the community.

LEARN + MAKE

We’ve also got NEW WORKSHOPS!

We have three different 4-week courses planned for October, so if you’ve been looking for a good time to take the plunge into a book binding, screenprinting, or fine art printmaking on the etching press, then the time has arrived! These are the only long courses we will be able to offer for the rest of the year, so if you want to get serious about one of these techniques before 2025, this is your chance to learn (and split the cost of learning) with a small group of other artists.

Private workshops for custom goals

If these don’t work for your schedule, of course, you’re not totally out of luck. You can add any of our Private Instruction workshops to your cart and check out to book a 4 hour workshop that works for you. We’ll reach out to schedule your private workshop ASAP. If you want to set up Private Instruction for something a little more off-the-beaten-path, you can still absolutely do so through this link. Members: You get 20% off on all Private Instruction! We’re doing what we can to keep you up to date on whats up with us. If the things you’re working on involve us and you need anything from us to move forward, please reach out. We’re doing a lot of hands-on work at this time, so we’ll be a little slower on the emails. Patience and good planning will be very much appreciated! And if you have a short notice need? Whether you know and love Miami’s deep cultural arts scene or find yourself surprised to hear it has one, we strongly encourage makers and stewards of artists’ books world-wide to take a good, hard look at Feb. 6-9th, 2025 on their calendars and get this application in by July 31st. We can’t wait to see what folks will bring this year.

Workshops to look forward to

Come spend a little time with Sammi McLean at the studio in August. Start winding down your summer with the Print Club Linocut Demo, or if you’re really excited for fall, nothing will bring back the best of those back-to-school butterflies like making some fresh new blank books! Learn to bind your own, and you can make that niche form of euphoria for yourself whenever you want. There’s no better time and place to get started.

Announcements first:

We are working toward some major projects and improvements here at the studio, so our workshop offerings from now through our 10 year anniversary in September will be reduced. We are really excited about the work we’ll be doing this summer during our break from our usual teaching schedules. We think you will be, too, but for now, you’ll just have to trust us on that — all the big announcements are for later.

There is still plenty to do here between now and then, though, and plenty of ways to learn (including some great changes to Private Instruction — see the second half of this letter for more details!)

  • Friday, Jan. 12: Member Night — Shop talk with Ingrid and 3 hours of Open Studio time. If you’re receiving this email, you are invited! Non-studio insiders must become studio members to attend Member Nights.

Upcoming Deadlines (spread the word!):

Upcoming studio scheduling changes:

  • Dec 29th-Jan 1st: Studio is closed for New Years

  • Feb 4th-25th: Ingrid is out of town

    • Feb 4th-7th: IS Projects and Tropic Bound will be exhibitors at CODEX. If you will be in San Francisco for the fair, say hello to Ingrid at one of those tables!

    • Feb 8th-25th: Ingrid is off the clock and out of the country. Please email or cc brooke@isprojectsfl.com if you need anything from the studio during this date range. You will not be hearing back from Ingrid until after she returns to the studio on Feb 26th.

    • PREPARE: Many of our services (production and assisted studio time for screenprinting and letterpress, especially) depend upon Ingrid. If your upcoming studio goals involving us have any dates in February, please reach out ASAP so that we can make a plan!

LEARN + MAKE

Come in and make things!

  • Open Studio Sessions for January are posted! Members can reserve their spots in a session by purchasing it on our website.

  • Members-Only Studio Passes are up for January and February! There are only 4 per month — if you know you’re going to want to come in and work a lot in one of these months, this is the best deal with the least planning required!

  • Workshops from now through March are posted on our website. Our workshops are the best value on instruction at the studio, especially with the discount members get according to their membership level. Plus, you’ll build a weekly routine of working in the studio and learn with an intimate group of other folks who are just as pumped about paper as you are.

  • Especially exciting in January: check out Ingrid’s Modern Letterpress course — this rare and special opportunity to learn to print on the Vandercooks is not something you’ll want to miss. Access to letterpress facilities is very special, and opportunities to learn to use them are few and far between. Letterpress is the technological foundation of modern literacy and self-publishing, yielding many of the strategies for resistance and critical collaborative practices in print that we still see at work today. Letterpress printers are all over the world, forming a tight network of friends and colleagues with a wildly diverse set of objectives, and united by their common love of chasing their dreams with machines. If it’s something you’re interested in learning about, this is your best opportunity to do so in South Florida. Don’t sleep on it — reach out to Brooke at brooke@isprojectsfl.com if you have any questions.
