Private Instruction: Linocut
Private Instruction: Linocut
Class Length: 4 Hours per session
Up to 4 participants welcome
Together with the assistance of an IS Projects collaborator, participants with any level of experience will be guided through the process of making a linocut print, which is a type of relief printmaking. In relief prints (like linocut, which uses a block of linoleum as a matrix, and woodcut, which instead uses wood), a design is carved into a block, and the ink is rolled onto the uncarved, high parts of the block before printing. Everything that is raised prints, and everything that has been carved away will expose the surface you’re printing onto, so relief lends itself well to bold, graphic designs. Relief printing is easy to do at home and lends itself well to printing on textiles, too.
Preparing to print is just as involved as printing itself, so we offer the following options:
The Fundamentals: 1 four-hour session. You will learn how to prepare your linoleum block, design and carve a one-layer image, set pressure on the etching press, ink and proof your block. Whether or not you walk away with an edition of identical prints will depend upon how long you spend carving your block, but you will leave with as many proofs and prints as you can pull during your session. This crash course is focused on teaching you the foundational skills you need in order to continue making relief prints.
Printing only: 1 four-hour session. You already have your block carved and ready to print. This session will cover inking your block, proofing, troubleshooting your printing, and signing and editioning your prints. You will absolutely leave with a bunch of prints, and can choose to focus on producing an edition of identical prints, a varied edition, or a bunch of experimental prints. You can purchase additional printing-only sessions if you want more time printing, or you can explore studio membership.
Both: 2 four-hour sessions (8 hours total). Session 1 is the fundamentals, Session 2 is all about printing.
Scheduling: We are a small and busy team, but we are as flexible as we can be! We typically schedule Private Instruction during our 11AM-7PM business hours, Tuesday-Friday. Weekend and after-hours appointments can sometimes be arranged, though.
It is easiest to accommodate requests with at least 2 weeks advanced notice, but we can sometimes make it work short notice. After receiving your order, we will reach out to you via email to schedule your workshop.
If you have very specific scheduling needs which will determine whether or not this will work for you, please feel free to reach out to brooke@isprojectsfl.com to confirm that we can meet them. Examples of such needs would be: Short notice scheduling, a swiftly approaching deadline, planning the workshop to occur on one specific date like a birthday.
