October 2022 Newsletter
/No need for sunscreen at SPF’22!
We have been counting down the days until 2022’s Small Press Fair since we returned the steamroller last year. Now that we have less than two weeks to go, we wanted to make sure you had it on your calendar, too!
If you are reading this and wondering: What steamroller? Sunscreen? What is this email even about? Isn’t this a printmaking newsletter? Then rest assured: if you love prints, books, and zines SPF’22 is not something you want to miss.
Co-founded by the unstoppable force of nature that is Sarah Michelle Rupert and our very own inimitable founder Ingrid Schindall, Small Press Fair is in its seventh year! It is the largest print/book/zine event in Broward County and it is totally free to attend. Exhibitors come from all over the country to meet other artists, publishers, collectors, and enthusiasts from all walks of life. This year, it’s bigger than ever, with the fair itself lasting for two whole days, and taking over MAD Artspace in Dania Beach, FL. This means that in addition to turning the fair into a weekend-long event (it was previously only one day), it is now indoors and totally air conditioned! Those of you who have attended or exhibited during previous, box fans-only SPF years know that this will be a huge boost to an already wildly fun experience. There will be a ton to see within those walls during SPF’22 — two fantastic solo print exhibitions by Martin Mazzora and Jesse Shaw, workshops and demos, cold beer, and of course, over 60 exhibitor tables bursting with art, books, buttons, and plenty of other things we can’t predict! Come see what other folks are making, pick up some really cool things for your own collection, and if you’re a book/zine/printmaker yourself, the space is nearly full so be sure to book yourself a space ASAP — register as an exhibitor.
“And the steam roller?”
Yes! There will be a steam roller! And yes, we will be using it to print oversized relief prints in the street! And the best part? It’s not too late to sign up and print your own. So perhaps more accurately, sunscreen is optional beyond your usual daily SPF. If you want to make a steamroller print, it might still be wise to put some on.
Read on for an outline of everything you’ll want to add to your calendar that’s happening here in the studio and out in the community that we have planned from now until 2023!
SPF’s look this year is brought to you by baghead!

Our Studio Members are invited to bring an artwork to discuss with our staff and other members. We’ll provide snacks and drinks, and together we’ll celebrate great registration, troubleshoot ink consistency issues, and dive deep into all the other ups and downs that keep us busy in the studio. This event is totally free, but its members only, so sign up for a Studio Membership ASAP if you want to come!

LEARN + MAKE
As always, we have some really awesome classes coming up. Brooke Frank is guiding a three week monotype course which starts this Wednesday, so sign up ASAP! In November, Sammi McLean’s Print Club demo will be focused on drypoint. And in December? Gabriela Gamboa is here to get a prototype of that photo book you’ve been dreaming of out of your head and onto paper. In addition to our scheduled workshops, we have added a whole bunch of Open Studio Sessions to the calendar! Guided by our Key Holder Residents, Charlisa Montrope and Nat Sassine, the Open Studio Sessions are four hours for you to do whatever you want here, and at only $40, it’s the best deal we have on any form of studio time here! To participate in Open Studio, you have to be a studio member, and you have to know how to use whatever equipment you want to use safely and independently. Book some assisted studio time if you want to brush up before you register for Open Studio!
MEMBERSHIPS
Not sure about Studio Membership yet? It gets you year long access to our equipment, of course, but also tons of fun perks, and you’ll end up with the whole team here thinking about your art all week long! We love our members and are constantly trying to figure out how we can make their dreams come true. Check out all four of our exciting membership programs here and see what makes the most sense for you! We would love to see you in the studio making your work soon. We would particularly like to recommend our Portfolio Development Membership — it is our most community-focused membership program and there is a limited number of spots available. If you want to get to know an intimate group of thoughtful, print-focused artists, this might be exactly what you need. Check it out!
