Line Etching + Aquatint workshop at IS Projects

SURPRISE SPECIAL WORKSHOP DROP:

The Line Etching + Aquatint Intensive starts next Tuesday, 10/24, and our members are the first to know!

We have only TWO SEATS LEFT in this very special four week intaglio intensive lead by Ingrid Schindall. Participants will spend the four weeks working on one copper plate — preparing it, building an image through line etching and aquatint, and then learning to print it.

We have been asked many times if and when we would be offering a course which explores intaglio more deeply. We have not taught a dedicated scheduled intaglio workshop in this space yet, and it may take some time before you see it in our regular workshop rotation, so if it’s something you’ve been wanting to learn more about, I would not recommend waiting for the next round. This is a special and spontaneous opportunity, and we’d love to have you in it!

This workshop is live on our website now, but won’t be announced via Instagram just yet. You’ve got a head start. This is proof that checking your emails can, in fact, be rewarding.

This is also your last chance to sign up for Brooke Frank’s Printing in Color workshop — a one day course taking place this coming Saturday which will set you up with an excellent foundation in color theory and practice with a focus on printmaking.

One more thing: Party at the Studio this Sunday!

This Sunday we’re hosting a reception for the work on our Project Wall. We’ll be at the studio hanging out with Baghead and celebrating his work from 4-6PM following Progressive Art Brunch. It’s a great day to see what everyone’s got on view in Miami, and a great time to stop in to say hello, show off the studio to your friends and family, and cap of a full day of light refreshments with more light refreshments. RSVP not required, but useful to ensure we’ve got the snacks planned out right!

If you participated in the Under the Sun portfolio exchange and you haven’t picked up your copy yet, this would be a great time to do so.

Reach out to Brooke at brooke@isprojectsfl.com if there’s anything we can help you with. Hope to see you at the studio soon!

Fall 2023

This weekend is gonna be WILD!

And we want to make sure our members get all the details, so we’ll keep it brief!

Friday, 6PM-9PM: Start things off nice and easy with Member Night

Brooke Frank will be in the studio from to host. Feel free to drop in and chat with her about your work, to enjoy light refreshments in good company, and to to get in some time on the presses! In case you missed it, our Member Nights are free and now include free unassisted studio access. Come in and get inky! Please RSVP at this link if you can so we can be sure we’re here for you.

Saturday: Spend the day in Little River!

  • 11:30AM-1:30PM: Start your day off at Locust Projects for the opening reception of Eyes of the SkinJen Clay’s solo exhibition and video game debut. We produced an edition of artists’ books with Jen in 2017 through our Existent Books publishing program, so we know first hand just how much hard work and care Jen has put into this work, and we absolutely can’t wait to see it.

  • 1PM-6PM: Dalé Zine will be hosting their Happy Zine micro-press fair, simultaneous with Walter’s Mercado right next door! This is all a super comfortable walk from the studio, and as a print and book lover in Miami, Happy Zine is a must.

  • 3PM-7PM: The IS Projects and Nocturnal Press 9 Year Anniversary Party!! We are going all out — we’ll be letterpress printing the 9 Year Anniversary poster live and you can pull your own! We’ll have snacks and drinks and even a silent auction on some of our smallest presses! The first 75 people to show up can have a free copy of an artists’ book by Charlisa Montrope. The edition of books, called Since 1890 or So, is brand new! It was produced to accompany the latest Little River Idyllic Streams playlist, which is also being launched at this party. Come hear, see, and make!

They’re all boxed up and ready to go home!

Under the Sun is DONE!

If you submitted prints to our Under the Sun portfolio exchange, then we have news for you: The portfolios have been collated, boxed, and they’re ready to go home! The party this Saturday is also the first day you can pick up the exchange in person from IS Projects. We’ll be emailing all participants soon to coordinate any shipping or alternative pick up arrangements needed, but if you can make it, this will definitely be the most fun opportunity to come in and bask in all of the exchange’s 12x12” magic!

This is also the last weekend to swing by Studio 18 in Pembroke Pines, FL, if you wanted to see the whole exchange installed in the gallery! The exchange is currently on view there as a part of the exhibition of exchanges we curated there called Chance Encounters. The exhibition comes down next week, so definitely find your way out there ASAP if you were planning to drop by.

Summer 2023

It’s been a year!

We opened the doors of our Miami space to the public on June 25th, 2022, and wow, has it been a year or what? When we made the move from Fort Lauderdale, one of the first and biggest changes we made was the introduction of our studio membership program. We wanted to create a structure which made the folks who make art at IS Projects feel like they have a stake in it. We wanted you to feel like you belong.

We are so incredibly grateful to all of you receiving this email. We have had such a wonderful time working with you on your projects, experiments, curiosities, and dreams, and we are so glad to be a part of exploring them with you. Helping you grow is at the heart of the dreams we had for this program — which is to say this: The dreaming is mutual.

This email means that our first wave of membership renewals isn’t far off. If you’ve got things you’ve been meaning to come in and work on, there are lots of options for you here, and if you’re free later, consider coming into the studio today:

It’s Member Night! This free event is today, Friday, June 22nd at IS Projects from 6-9PM. It is only open to studio members and the current IS Projects team. For three hours, you can enjoy snacks, drinks, free unassisted studio access (first-come, first-served on all equipment), and a great chance to meet other print, book, and paper lovers in your community. This month, member night will be hosted by our founder/director/lead maker of things, Ingrid Schindall. If you’ve been hoping to pick Ingrid’s brain about the things you’re working on, this is your chance! Consider Member Night her quarterly office hours. We suggest you RSVP for tonight’s Member Night if you’d like to attend so we can plan to see you, though you’re welcome to drop in unannounced.

Under the Sun is well underway

Many of the artists participating in out first annual portfolio exchange, Under the Sun, have delivered their editions to the studio already (thank you, artists!) but there’s still time to come in and work on yours, if you signed up to participate! The delivery deadline has been extended until June 30th by 7PM.

Between then and now, we will have:

  • Member Night (today, June 22nd, 6-9PM): 3 hours of free open studio access

  • Open Studios on Saturday (June 24th) and Sunday (June 25th): $40 for access during each 4 hour session

  • Some availability remains for assisted and unassisted studio time next week during our Tuesday-Friday, 11AM-7PM business hours, but it’s filling up fast! Email Brooke at brooke@isprojectsfl.com to make some plans!

This portfolio exchange will be debuted in an exhibition we’ve curated at Studio 18 in Pembroke Pines, FL, which is home to 18 individual artists’ studios, two teaching spaces, and an intimate gallery space. The exhibition, Chance Encounters, places a selection of portfolio exchanges borrowed from friends and colleagues around the country in conversation with one another. It will be a great opportunity to consider the way that we think about our connections with other artists in our own practices — a central part of most exchanges and exhibitions, which we feel is amplified by this project being shared in an active studio environment. The opening is on July 28th from 7-9PM and will be a wonderful opportunity to broaden your sense of the community you have access to here. We would love to see you there. Keep an eye out for an announcement about a special on-site performance at the opening — more details coming soon!

Monthly studio passes are posted for now-November

Spring 2023

We’re starting to experiment with papermaking over here. Keep an eye out for more papermaking possibilities in the near future!

Lots to look forward to for Members:

We have been having a fabulous time with you all so far in 2023. We see our members and their work all over the place (we especially loved seeing you at Tropic Bound in February!) and we have really enjoyed having you all in workshops, Open Studio Sessions, and here during our business hours for studio rentals. You’ve been making some really cool work and it’s been our pleasure to be a part of it.

IS Projects and Nocturnal Press have been rocking some huge projects in this first quarter but have a slightly more relaxed program for Q2 so now is a great time to reach out about assisted studio time, custom workshops, print or artists’ book development programs, or events. Whatever it is you’re looking to make, we’re here to help!

Coming up fast: Portfolio Exchange deadline

Many of you have signed up to participate in the first-annual IS Projects portfolio exchange, Under the Sun, and we can’t wait to see what you all submit! If you signed up to participate by the February 28th deadline, you’re in! We sent an email with participation details on March 15th — if you signed up through our website and haven’t seen that email, check your spam folder for an email with the subject line: “Welcome to IS Projects' first print portfolio exchange!” from isprojectsfl@gmail.com. If you can’t find it and think we may have missed you, please send Brooke an email to get that straightened out!

Participating artists must deliver their edition of 45 works to IS Projects by 7PM on Friday, June 16th, 2023. Failure to deliver on time will result in your being cut from the exchange.

June 16th may seem far away, but it’s barely more than 2 months from now! If you have questions or wish to book studio time (Assisted or Unassisted), please email Brooke at brooke@isprojectsfl.com. Fun fact: all of the ISP/NP staff (Ingrid, Brooke and Amber) are participating as well!

If you can’t wait to get started, come to Open Studio Sessions! We will be posting them to the Classes page on our website as we schedule them. We’ve got two coming up this Sunday, and plenty more on their way! Each session is 4 hours long and only costs $40. Remember, you must be comfortable working independently to come to Open Studios.

Golden Ticket: $250 for unlimited studio hours?!

We have just dropped a wild new way to pay for your studio time. You can buy a Members Only Studio Pass for April, May, or June for only $250 for each month. If you buy a pass for April, you have free Unassisted Studio Rental hours AND free access to any Open Studio Sessions for the entire month! There is no hours maximum for the pass, but the Studio Rental hours must fall within our business hours (T-F 11am-7pm) and you do still have to schedule your studio time with us to ensure the equipment you need is ready and waiting for you when you arrive. These passes also come with a discount on Assisted Studio Time for the month you buy the pass in — you’ll only be paying $45 an hour with your Studio Pass to learn whatever you want to learn!

We have only released four passes each in April, May, and June. We’ve never done this before and may not do it again. If you like the sound of this, sign up ASAP! You may not get another chance.

Featured Workshops:

We decided to feature a small selection of our upcoming workshops for early release, and our Studio Members are the first to hear about it. All Members can use the code STUDIOMEMBER to get a 10% discount on any of our upcoming workshops — don’t forget!

This weekend, we jump right in to our newest batch of workshops with a Print Club day — Sammi McLean will be leading a demo on image transfer techniques from 10AM-12PM, and hosting a special Open Studio session immediately after from 12PM-4PM. Please remember that Print Club members get 50% off of Print Club days with their special Print Club exclusive code!

Member Nights: Come hang!

We’ve reworked two of our free quarterly member events to encourage a broader assortment of folks to come on through. Our quarterly Shop Talk and Group Critique have been transformed into Member Nights. Here’s what you can expect at our Member Nights:

  • Each Member Night will last from 6PM to 9PM, and will have snacks and drinks for you to enjoy!

  • You can come at any time and are welcome to leave when you wish, it’s an unstructured event.

  • You are invited to come in and work on anything you like during the Member Night events — all equipment is first-come, first-served. (Yes, that means FREE studio access!)

  • The Member Night on April 28th will be hosted by Ingrid Schindall, and she will be there to handle all the Shop Talk topics — bring some work to discuss if you have technical questions about book, paper, and print! All are welcome to hang and chat with Ingrid to pick her brain about registration techniques, ink consistency, and more!

  • Similarly, Brooke Frank will be hosting the Member Night on June 23rd. Brooke will be hanging out to talk to folks about the content of their work. If you’ve been looking for a thoughtful conversation about your ideas, this is a great place to start. If enough folks are interested, we can have an informal Group Critique.

  • Please RSVP by emailing Brooke Frank at brooke@isprojectsfl.com. You are welcome to drop in, but the event will be cancelled without an announcement if we have zero RSVPs.

Sammi McLean, Amber Frank, and Brooke Frank (no relation) talking about Sammi’s incredible collagraphs during Shop Talk. You can come to the next Shop Talk AND you can take Sammi’s Collagraph Workshop next quarter, details about both can be found in this email.

We hope to see you around soon!

As always, please reach out to Brooke if there’s anything you need. We want to see you here at the studio! Let us know what’s up with you, what you want to make, what you want to learn — whatever! Our inbox is always open!

Winter 2022

A little suminagashi marbling demo earlier this year, lead by Brooke and proven effective by our former intern, Khanh Ho.

Saying goodbye to 2022

It’s been an incredible, unforgettable, wonderful and sometimes seemingly insurmountable, year. As 2022 comes to a close, we have been reflecting on all of the exciting projects you’ve brought our way, the great questions you’ve raised, and all of the exciting ways we’ve been able to grow together. However big or small our role was in your year, we’re really grateful to have been a part of it.

We have a couple of things to catch you up on before we get to 2023 to make sure you’re ready to make the most of your time with us. It’s all good news from here, so read on to see what’s we’ve got planned.

Holiday Hours

If you are still hoping to sneak in some prints before New Years, you are not out of luck! We are maintaining our normal business hours right up to the end, with only two exceptions: we will be closed on Friday, December 23rd and Friday, December 30th. If you are hoping to rent some time on a press Tuesday through Thursday, 11AM-7PM through the end of the year, please reach out as soon as possible to coordinate. As always, you can arrange your studio rental by emailing Brooke Frank at brooke@isprojectsfl.com, stating what you want to work on, what equipment or studio area you’ll need, and when you’d like to come in. We will return to our usual studio hours in 2023, welcoming you to print Tuesday-Friday, 11AM-7PM.

Last-Minute Gift Ideas

The holidays are here and, if you’re at all like us, it’s possible that you might still have some gifts to give. We also suspect it’s possible that your life is full of creative folks who might like to learn or make something new. If you’re still trying to sort out a thoughtful gift to give, we have a couple of ideas for you!

We of course have a small selection of prints and handmade leather journals here, if you’re looking for a something more tactile, but if your loved one is more interested in experiences, we have great news:

If you’ve been coming in to print and thinking that a studio membership would be really great for someone you love, we have now made it possible to gift a studio membership to anyone! You purchase the membership at this link, you receive a code, and you share the code and the corresponding sign-up form with this very lucky person so that they can tell us in their own words about what they’re excited to make.

If instead you’re looking for something a little more casual, your discount on scheduled workshops applies to every workshop seat you buy in this holiday season with your STUDIOMEMBER code, so you can purchase seats for you and your loved one to learn new things together! We always have a good time with our workshops, but having some folks who know each other sign up together makes for an extra fantastic time. We have just released our next wave of workshops, so explore the options on our website, or scroll to the bottom of this email for a preview.

Either way, gift wrap is optional, and fun is guaranteed!

New Membership Benefits

We are always thinking about how we can make sure we’re providing you with the support your practice needs to grow — whether that’s more time to come in and print or more opportunities to build up and be a part of the South Florida print community. There are a few things coming up that are members-only benefits that we wanted to put on your radar as soon as possible.

  • Last quarter, we quietly integrated weekend Open Studio Sessions hosted by our Key Holder Residents, and we are very happy to report that we will be continuing to offer these sessions in the new year! We have not published the next wave of Open Studios yet, but they will be found in the “Classes” page on our website very soon. Each session is four hours, costs only $40, and is open to our studio members exclusively. These Open Studio Sessions are to be treated as unassisted studio time, which means you will need to be able to work independently in our studio in order to attend. If you need a little assisted studio time to prepare, be sure to reach out to Brooke to schedule that as soon as you can!

  • On Friday, January 20th, 2023, 7-9PM we will be introducing a new members-only program: Group Critique! We are planning for this to be a quarterly benefit for folks in all of our studio membership programs. Any studio member interested in participating in a constructive and productive conversation about their own work and the work of others is invited to bring one work of art to discuss. We will provide snacks and drinks, we will handle the time keeping, and Brooke will serve as our moderator. Please email her to RSVP — it’s free to attend, but it helps us plan!

  • On Friday, March 3rd, 2023, 7-9PM we will be hosting our quarterly Shop Talk event. Moderated by Ingrid, this event is an opportunity to get real geeky about all things book/paper/print. All studio members are invited to bring one work to discuss, and then the group will focus on an entirely technical conversation. This is a great opportunity to get a whole bunch of printer-brains together to figure out what’s wrong with your ink, or to show off your incredible registration, and of course, we will be providing snacks and drinks for this too. Please email Brooke to RSVP to this event, as well.

  • Lastly, we wanted to give you a slightly mysterious heads-up about our upcoming members-only portfolio exchange! We still have to hammer out the details (the size of the prints, a potential theme, and the deadlines involved in participating… it may even be possible to put together a show!), but we are looking to have the portfolio completed by the end of spring. Keep an eye on your inbox for details and deadlines — they’re coming soon!

Lastly: Tropic Bound

You would not be receiving this email if you weren’t excited about some aspect of book and printmaking, so it would be ridiculous not to put this on your radar. From February 16th-19th, the Design District will be home to Miami’s first international Artists’ Book Fair! Ingrid is collaborating with Cristina Favretto, the Head of Special Collections at the University of Miami, and Sarah Michelle Rupert, the Collections Director at Girls’ Club Collection and also Ingrid’s co-founder for Small Press Fair, to bring Tropic Bound to life. It kicks off with a symposium, includes a bunch of auxiliary events and print/book focused Miami tours, and of course, the main event is the opportunity to meet, buy books from, and connect with exhibitors from all over the world!

Ingrid and Brooke are also co-curating a show of artists’ books for the Main Branch of the Miami Made Public Library — this will open a little before Tropic Bound and visiting it at the library would be a splendid addition to your print-and-book-themed plans that week. Keep an eye out for more on that, too! (This is the first we’ve mentioned of this show to anyone — yet another of your membership perks.)

Now you’re all caught up! We’re looking forward to seeing you around the studio and out in the world. We’re hoping you enjoy the holidays, get some well-deserved rest, and come back to us inspired!

Happy holidays, winter solstice, and New Year!

Fall 2022

Flag binding, which you can learn from Carol Todaro and Lisa Haque in the upcoming weekend workshop Accordion three ways: The fantastic elastic folded spine

Hello, and congratulations!

Why are you being congratulated? Well, this is our very first quarterly members-only newsletter, and we think it’s a huge deal that you committed to working with us so early into our time here in Miami. We are so honored and excited to have you in our community and in our studio. Thank you!

This quarter’s member newsletter will be short and sweet. We have only one announcement and then, of course, the early bird scoop on the workshops!

The announcement: IS Projects and Nocturnal Press will be temporarily closed starting September 13th, and reopening on September 27th for studio rentals, commissioned printing, and all other usual business. We will not be monitoring our emails during that period as the entire staff will be in Italy! Together! On vacation! With all of our moms! This is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, so we hope you understand and can be patient with us. (Don’t worry about the shop, we have some good friends keeping an eye on her while we’re gone.)

An example of a photobook page layout by gabriela Gamboa, who you can learn from in the 2-day workshop she’s teaching in December called Mapping out a photo book.

While we’re gone, though, we wanted to give you something to look forward to, so all of our next quarter’s workshops have gone live on the site, and you can sign up for them with your members-only discount code at your convenience. Of course, the sooner you sign up, the better. Seats are limited.

If you have any questions, please reach out and we will reply as soon as we’re home!

Warmly,

IS Projects
