November Class Newsletter

NOVEMBER IS FOR PRINTERS

November is easily one of THE most active months for the studio. With our sights on Small Press Fair, staff, interns and studio regulars are busy finalizing print series, binding zines and carving giant woodblocks to be steamroll-printed during the fair. Meanwhile, our four-week courses have been introducing studio and print-enthused newbies to everything from proper press handling to linocut and handset letterpress. Needless to say, all the presses have been very happy and getting good use this month. Check out what we’ve been up to and what to look forward to below!

We wrapped up our Intro to Print Four week course with chine colle, blend rolls, dry point and monoprinting. We look forward to seeing how these new printers continue to develop their craft.

We have loved partnering with our neighbors, Small Wine Shop, on a monthly series of Drink and Ink Date Night classes that pair natural wine tasting with printmaking techniques. The color combos and compositions from this month’s Sumingashi paper marbling class were seriously stunning!

Our Intro to Letterpress Students have been meticulously setting type over the last two weeks to produce custom lettepress greeting cards! Check out their first layer.

Isotype Printing: Subtractive Abstraction

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 11th 10AM - 6PM

Isotype printing is a new letterpress method for creating abstract imagery from wood type. Letterforms are made of horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and curved lines. By combining a mask with customized packing on Vandercook-style cylinder proofing presses, artists can safely isolate these letterform components. The unique subtractive results of this experimental technique expand movable type’s creative possibilities in exciting ways. All levels are welcome, but letterpress printing experience is recommended.
