Sasha Baskin & Christina Humphreys
The Mechanical Bride explores the digital realities and influence of mass media and pop culture on the individual. Through complex weaving and embroidery works, Sasha Baskin and Christina Humphreys explore symbols and digital languages to address pop culture, societal structures and systematic breakdowns. Analog stitches and woven structures dissolve into pixel and binary patterns which distort, overlap and mimic code.
Sasha Baskin's weaving and drawing work explores the intersection of craft and classical rendering. She uses traditional weaving and lacemaking processes in combination with source imagery from reality television to address the intersections between analog and digital technologies. Trained in classical drawing, Baskin received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2014 and worked as a portrait artist for several years. Transitioning to craft and studying weaving, natural dyes, and ikat dye resist processes, she received her MFA in Craft and Material Studies in 2018.
Christina Humphreys is an interdisciplinary artist working in textile, painting, installation and digital media. She has lived in Miami and Tampa, Florida, where she earned a BFA with a focus in painting from the University of South Florida. She is a former collective member of Quaid Gallery and Cunsthaus. She has exhibited her work throughout Florida, Portland, OR and Havana, Cuba. She currently lives and works in San Francisco, CA.
