Member Night

All IS Projects Studio Members are invited to come in and hang out for Member Night.

This is essentially a free 3 hour open studio session, plus snacks and drinks, hosted by Brooke Frank. Members are welcome to come and go as they please, and are encouraged to use this time to meet each other and get comfortable in the studio. This is also a great opportunity to bring completed or in progress work in to discuss with Brooke (and anyone else who’s hanging around!) for greater insight into the conceptual aspects of what you’ve made or what you’d like to do next. With enough interested folks, we can form an intimate group critique. It’s an open, friendly night in the studio for anyone who wants to get inky.

If you are not yet a Studio Member, sign up ASAP to attend!

Lexicon of Longing Opening Reception

Lexicon of Longing Opening Reception

Join us for the Lexicon of Longing Opening Reception during the January FATVillage artwalk in the IS Projects Gallery!

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:

Lexicon of Longing is a solo exhibition of artists' books and prints by Golnar Adili which grapple with deconstructing and reconstructing past traumas. Adili's work uses family photographs, language, and play to reshape memory, experiences of displacement and identity.

Forgetting and relearning both English and Persian multiple times has made language a fascinating reference in Adili's work. Persian poetry, as well as biographical text investigating a landscape of longing, have provided a valuable context for examining language formally. These investigations include physically building words and letters with a multitude of materials. In doing so, Adili uses architecture, book arts, and installation to distort and blur the lines between design, craft, and fine art.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Golnar Adili is a mixed media artist, educator, and designer with a focus on diasporic identity. She holds a master's degree in architecture from the University of Michigan and has attended residencies at the Rockefeller Foundation for the Arts (Bellagio, Italy), Center for Book Arts (NYC), Smack Mellon (Brooklyn, NY), Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown (MA), MacDowell Colony (NYC), Ucross Foundation for the Arts (Clearmont, WY), Lower East Side Printshop (NYC), Women’s Studio Workshop (Rosendale, NY), and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace (NYC), among others. Adili has shown her work internationally; venues include: the Victoria and Albert Museum (London, UK), NURTUREart (Brooklyn, NY), Craft and Folk Art Museum (Los Angeles, CA), and International Print Center New York (NYC). She has received several grants, including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, NYFA Fellowship in Printmaking/Drawing/Artists Books, and the Jerome Hill Finalist Grant. Adili is a Jameel Prize finalist. Her artist books are in several collections, including the Library of Congress, Rutgers University, Yale University, and University of Michigan.

MakerMatching Reception

MakerMatching Reception

Join us for the MakerMatching Opening Reception and a virtual artist talk in the IS Projets Gallery!
Reception: 6-10pm (in-person)

Bridget Elmer and Emily Larned originally founded Impractical Labor in Service of the Speculative Arts (ILSSA) in 2008 to find and connect with other impractical laborers—those interested in cultivating a considered, thoughtful, and balanced creative practice. They were looking for alternatives, interested in blurring disciplinary lines, and searching for a community of makers who valued process over product. The impetus for that search was born from their friendship and the rare, immediate connection that they discovered when their paths crossed many moons ago. With MakerMatching, they are returning to that genesis and working together with IS Projects to create space for other paths in their orbits to cross with our community.

MakerMatching is a collaborative project and exhibition organized by ILSSA and IS Projects all about matching makers—searching for potential connections within our communities and creating space for new conversations to begin. In this pandemic era, the value of human connection has become palpable. As we cautiously emerge from isolation, we are naturally drawn to reconnect, but at a smaller, more intimate scale; ready for new conversations, primed to consider alternatives, and eager to grow.

MakerMatching culminates in an exhibition at IS Projects highlighting the importance of connection and support within creative practice. Whether they're members of ILSSA or creatives from the IS Projects' community, makers of all disciplines were mailed a handset letterpress survey to be filled out and returned in order to match them with other makers.

ABOUT OUR COLLABORATORS

Impractical Labor in Service of the Speculative Arts (ILSSA) is a union for reflective practice and membership organization for artists and makers that fosters community, new ideas, tools, and resources. ILSSA observes a an annual holiday, the Festival to Plead for Skills; organizes participatory exhibitions and events; and facilitates an annual group residency.

Fresh Prints Opening Reception & Virtual Artist Talk!

Fresh Prints Opening Reception & Virtual Artist Talk!

Join us for the Fresh Prints Opening Reception and a virtual artist talk in the IS Projets Gallery!

Artist Talk: 6-6:30pm (virtually on @isprojectsfl Instagram live)
Opening Reception: 6:30-10pm (in-person)

Fresh Prints presents a collection of prints and artists' books from a group of local artists working at every level and from every discipline, on IS Projects’ presses week after week. Through varied approaches to printmaking, exhibited works highlight the core techniques taught in our studio each month, including letterpress printing, screen printing, book binding, intaglio and relief.

Fresh Prints is an annual Summer group show which began in 2019. This year's installment is unique in that much of the exhibited works were created during the pandemic, requiring artists to find creative solutions to printing with limited studio and press access.

The exhibited artists explore their personal narratives, political anxieties and relationship to nature through the lens of contemporary printmaking. Whether revisiting the press after decades away, learning how to pull a print for the very first time, or coming to printmaking from another medium, the studio creates common ground for each artist to hone their craft.

Featuring works by

Kylie Aylies, Jennifer Broutin Farah, Amber Frank,

Caro Gutierrez, Nickole Maurstad, Cristina Müller,

Alexandra Riesco, Leah Roobin, Coral Rose,

Jay Sylvestre, Abby Wang & William de Yampert
