Existent Books began in 2015 as a semi-annual publishing initiative which brings invited South Florida artists to IS Projects to experience fine art printmaking and letterpress printing. Through our Existent Books Residency, artists are invited to design an artist-book that is inspired by the studio’s collection of historical letterpress type and image cuts or new printmaking techniques learned at IS Projects. The goal of Existent Books is to encourage contemporary artists to contribute to the ongoing history of book arts while stimulating the evolution of the medium.
Since it’s inception, Existent Books has been dedicated to working with South Florida visual artists coming from all disciplines including graphic design and illustration, printmaking, sculpture, performance, painting and drawing. Throughout the residency, artists team up with our lead collaborator to help realize their vision.
In 2019, Existent Books was the proud recipient of The Knight Arts Challenge. Funding from the the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation will go towards supporting the project and its artists for 2020 and 2021 publications.
