Week 1: May 27 — Covering boards
Week 2: June 3 — Sewing on tapes
Week 3: June 10 — Case binding (Part 1)
Week 4: June 17 — Case binding (Part 2)
This course is designed for folks who have previously taken Introduction to Bookbinding, or who have previous experience with multisignature binding. It meets once a week for four weeks, and is designed to introduce a new book structure each week. Over the course, students can expect to learn the pamphlet stitch, drum leaf binding, accordion book, and long stitch. Each book will be customizable and each student will leave with their own handmade books and a new appreciation for the craft.
Participants will get a sense of how it feels to work in a communal space surrounded by others with similar interests. Participants will leave the class with a working knowledge of shop etiquette and bookbinding techniques and essential concepts, as well as a variety of blank handmade books to keep for themselves.
Additionally, participants are invited to attend Open Studio sessions (normally reserved for Studio Members) which occur between the first and last dates of this course. Access to Open Studio sessions can be purchased through the Classes page of our website.
